How to Remove Metadata From a PDF for Free

The information hiding in a PDF's properties

Every PDF carries metadata most people never see — a title, author name, the software used to create it, a creation and modification date, and sometimes far more, depending on how the file was produced. This isn't visible on the page itself; it shows up in a viewer's 'document properties' panel, and it's exactly the kind of thing that can accidentally reveal a real name, an internal software version, or a company identity on a document meant to be anonymous or public-facing.

When this actually matters

It comes up most with documents going out anonymously or to a wide public audience — a public comment submission, an anonymized report, a document being released under a freedom-of-information request, or any file where the author's identity specifically shouldn't be attached. It also matters for basic professionalism: a client-facing PDF that still lists a previous employee as the 'author' in its metadata, or shows an internal software name in its properties, looks sloppier than it needs to.

How to remove PDF metadata online for free

The typical process:

  • Upload the PDF.

  • Run the tool — it strips all metadata fields, not just some of them.

  • Download the file and check its properties panel to confirm the fields are actually empty.

Remove metadata by just asking

FlowPDF handles this the same way as everything else — upload the file and type "strip the metadata from this" or "remove my name from this file's properties." Every metadata field is cleared, not just the author field.

Removing vs. editing metadata

It's worth distinguishing this from setting metadata to something specific. If you want the author field to say a company name instead of a personal one, that's editing metadata to a new value, not removing it. Removing means clearing it out entirely, leaving the fields blank rather than replaced.

If the concern is content on the visible pages rather than hidden document properties, redacting specific sensitive text solves a different problem and is worth doing alongside metadata removal, not instead of it.
