How to Extract Plain Text From a PDF for Free

When you want text, not a document

Sometimes the goal isn't an editable Word document with the original layout preserved — it's just the raw words. Feeding a PDF's content into another tool, searching across it more easily, or copy-pasting a large chunk of text without fighting PDF selection quirks are all cases where a plain .txt file is more useful than a fully formatted .docx.

Plain text vs. converting to Word

This is the key distinction to understand before choosing between the two. Converting to Word reconstructs layout, formatting, and structure, aiming to recreate something close to the original document, editable. Extracting to plain text throws all of that away and keeps only the words themselves, with no fonts, no tables, no page structure — just text, one block after another. If you need to edit and reprint something that looks like the original, use Word conversion. If you just need the words, plain text is faster and simpler.

How to extract text from a PDF online for free

The typical process:

  • Upload the PDF.

  • Run the extraction.

  • Download the resulting .txt file.

Extract by just asking

With FlowPDF, upload the file and type "extract the text from this" or "give me this as plain text." The result is a plain .txt file with the document's readable text and nothing else.

Scanned PDFs won't have extractable text

This only works on PDFs with a real, digital text layer. If the PDF is a scanned image — a photo of a page rather than digitally created text — there's no character data to extract, and this tool will come back empty. That's expected behavior, not a bug; a scanned document needs OCR (optical character recognition) first to recognize the characters in the image before any text can be pulled out.

Related PDF tasks

If you need the text with formatting and layout preserved rather than stripped down to plain text, converting to Word is the better fit. And if the document is a scan with no real text layer at all, that's the root cause worth checking before assuming the extraction failed for another reason.
