How to Convert a PDF to PNG for Free
PNG vs JPG — when it actually matters
Most of the time, converting a PDF page to an image, JPG is the simpler default — smaller files, universally supported. PNG earns its place in a specific set of cases: when the page needs a transparent background, when it's going into design software that will be layered over other graphics, or when the content is mostly sharp lines, text, or vector-style graphics rather than a photo, where PNG's lossless compression keeps edges crisp instead of introducing the soft blur JPG compression can leave around text.
If you're not sure which you need, a simple rule covers most cases: photos and scanned documents are usually fine as JPG; logos, diagrams, screenshots, and anything going into a design tool are usually better as PNG.
How to convert a PDF to PNG online for free
The general steps most tools follow:
Upload the PDF.
Choose PNG rather than JPG as the output format, if the tool offers a choice.
Run the conversion — each page becomes a separate PNG file, usually delivered as a ZIP for multi-page documents.
Download and check that the resolution is high enough for your intended use.
Convert with a simple request
With FlowPDF, upload the PDF and type "convert this to PNG" — if you specifically need PNG for transparency or crisp lines rather than a generic image export, say so and it'll use PNG instead of defaulting to JPG. You can also ask for just one page, like "convert page 2 to PNG," if you don't need the whole document.
A note on file size
PNG files are typically larger than JPG for the same page, sometimes considerably so for image-heavy pages, because PNG doesn't throw away data the way JPG's lossy compression does. That's the tradeoff for the sharper, lossless result — worth knowing before converting a hundred-page document to PNG if file size or upload limits are a concern.
Related PDF tasks
If PNG's larger file size becomes a problem, JPG conversion is the lighter-weight option for the same pages. And if you're building a PDF from images rather than extracting images from a PDF, converting images to PDF covers the reverse direction.
